Though the term heart disease collectively refers to several types of heart conditions, including coronary artery disease and heart attack, it’s important to know that heart disease as a whole is the leading cause of death for men in the United States, despite racial or ethnic group. In 2019, heart disease was responsible for 357,761 deaths (which was about 1 in every 4 male deaths), half of whom had no previous symptoms.
Heart disease is known for being “silent” – that is there are few warning signs until the event is happening. When it does happen, be wary of chest pain, upper back or neck pain, indigestion, heartburn, extreme fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, fluttering feelings in the chest, or swelling in the lower body.
Men can reduce their risk for heart disease by changing diet and lifestyle choices – eat healthy, exercise regularly, limit alcohol/tobacco use, engage in activities that reduce stress – but it’s also important to be screened regularly so your healthcare provider can be notified of any concerning changes.
Your healthcare provider may recommend an electrocardiogram to check for signs of heart disease and detect abnormalities like heart damage or abnormal heart rhythms. An electrocardiogram (also known as ECG or EKG) is a noninvasive test that is used to reflect underlying heart conditions by measuring the electrical activity of the heart by positioning leads on the body in standardized locations.
Mas Imaging can perform this exam within the comfort of your own home or facility. With our EKG machine, we can also send out all studies remotely to be read within 24 hours so you get the results quicker – and can be treated faster if anything concerning appears.
